Coat of Arms
The Coat of Arms of the Federative Republic of Brazil consists of a five-pointed yellow-and-green star with a blue circle in the middle, surrounded by a coffee plant on the left-hand side and a tobacco plant on the right.
The central blue circle shows the Southern Cross and is surrounded by twenty-seven white stars representing the 26 states and the Federal District.
It also has a blue ribbon with the official name of the country, namely República Federativa do Brasil, and the date of 15 November 1889, the day the Republic was established.
National Anthem
Originally composed by Francisco Manuel as a purely orchestral piece for military bands, the words of the Brazilian national anthem were written by Osório Duque Estrada and officially adopted in 1922.
National Flag
The Brazilian national flag features a yellow diamond on a green background: green represents Brazil's lush vegetation and yellow its wealth in gold.
In the centre of the diamond there is a dark blue sphere representing the deep hue of the sky in the tropics. The sphere contains twenty-seven stars representing the capital of the country and its federal states, and across the middle of the sphere runs a white banner bearing the words Ordem e Progresso (Order and Progress).
