Bilateral Trade 2011 (Jan-Nov)

The United Kingdom ended the first eleven months of 2011 in ninth position among Brazil's principal trading partners, in terms of exports, and in sixteenth position, in terms of imports.

In comparison with the first eleven months of 2010, Brazilian exports to the UK in the first eleven months of 2011 increased by over 15% and Brazil's total imports from the UK increased by almost 3%. The increase in total trade between the two countries in relation to the corresponding period in 2010 went up by 10%. The balance of trade showed a surplus for Brazil.

Brazilian exports to the United Kingdom are diversified, even though raw materials and semi-manufactured products have always figured as important items. Manufactured products of a higher aggregated value are beginning to have more weight. Among Brazil's main exports to the UK, the products registering the most significant increases during the first eleven months of 2011 were: crude petroleum oils; coffee; gold, in semi-manufactured forms, for non monetary use; engine parts for motor vehicles; soya beans; salted meat, including poultry; iron ore and concentrates; and bovine meat preparations.

Brazilian imports from the UK are predominantly factors of production and capital goods. In the first eleven months of 2011, the main products showing the biggest increases were: fuel and gas oils, motor vehicles; whisky; professional, scientific, controlling instruments; earth moving, grading, excavating or boring machinery; radioactive chemical elements & isotopes; insecticides, herbicides and similar products; heterocyclic compounds, its salts & sulphonamides; and pumps, compressors, fans and parts.

Bilateral Trade 2010

In 2010 the United Kingdom was Brazil's seventh trading partner in terms of exports and thirteenth in terms of imports. The following table shows Brazil's main trading partners for 2010.

From 2000 to 2010, Brazilian exports to the United Kingdom grew by 209.3% in total. In 2010, after the recent world financial and economic crisis that affected trade in 2009, exports rose by over 24%. Brazilian imports from the United Kingdom have shown big increases in recent years, apart from 2009, and the increase in 2010 was of 31%. The balance of trade has shown a surplus for Brazil, in 2010, the surplus of almost $1.5 billion is the highest ever achieved.

Bilateral Trade 2009

In 2009 the United Kingdom was Brazil's seventh trading partner in terms of exports and thirteetnth in terms of imports.

From 1999 to 2009, Brazilian exports to the United Kingdom grew by 230.7% in total. In 2009, even taking into consideration the recent world financial and economic crisis, exports fell by just -1.72%. Brazilian imports from the United Kingdom have shown big increases in recent years, an increase of almost 38%, in 2007, was followed by a similar increase of just over 30%, in 2008. For 2009 there was a decline of almost -6% also mostly due to the recent world financial and economical crisis. The balance of trade, apart from in 1998, has shown a surplus for Brazil. In 2009, the surplus of over $1.3 billion is the third highest ever achieved.

In 2008 the United Kingdom was Brazil's fifteenth trading partner in terms of exports and eighteenth in terms of imports.

From 1998 to 2008, Brazilian exports to the United Kingdom grew by 183.1% in total. In 2008 exports grew by almost 15%. Brazilian imports from the United Kingdom fell from 1998 to 1999 and remained at that year's level in 2000 and 2001. After an increase of almost 9%, in 2002, imports declined by almost 11%, in 2003. In 2004 imports grew by over 12%, by 1.5% in 2005, and by just over 3% in 2006. In 2007 there was a huge increase of almost 38%, followed by a similar increase of almost 31% in 2008. The balance of trade has shown a surplus for Brazil, except in 1998. In 2008, the surplus of over $1.2 billion is the third highest ever achieved.

After an increase of almost 9%, in 2002, imports declined by almost 11%, in 2003. In 2004 imports grew by over 12%, by 1.5% in 2005, and by just over 3% in 2006. In 2007 there was a huge increase of almost 38%. The balance of trade has shown a surplus for Brazil, except in 1997 and 1998. In 2007, the surplus of over $1.3 billion is just below the highest achieved last year.
