Bilateral Trade 2008 (Jan-Jun)

The United Kingdom ended the first six months of 2008 in fifteenth position among Brazil's principal trading partners, in terms of exports, and in twenty-first position, in terms of imports.

In comparison with the first six months of 2007, Brazilian exports to the UK in the first six months of 2008 were 120.4% higher and Brazil's total imports from the UK registered a 34.5% increase. The increase in total trade between the two countries in relation to the corresponding period in 2007 was almost 26%. The balance of trade showed a surplus for Brazil.

Among Brazil's main exports to the UK, the products registering the most significant increases were: gold, in semi-manufactured forms, for non monetary use; electric motors & generating sets for aircrafts; aeroplanes and other aircraft; ol-cake & residues from the extraction of soya-bean oil; iron ore and concentrates; soya beans and residues; footwear; piston engines parts for motor vehicles; and plywood. Total exports to the UK grew by just over 20%, compared with the first six months of 2007.

Brazil's imports from the UK are predominantly factors of production and capital goods, with most of the main products showing increases in the first six months of 2008. In the first six months of 2008, Brazilian total imports from the UK grew by just under 35%, compared to the same period in 2007.

Bilateral Trade 2007

In 2007 the United Kingdom was Brazil's fifteenth trading partner in terms of exports and sixteenth in terms of imports.

From 1997 to 2007, Brazilian exports to the United Kingdom grew by 162.2% in total. In 2007 exports grew by almost 17%. Brazilian imports from the United Kingdom rose from 1997 to 1998, then fell in 1999 and remained at that year’s level in 2000 and 2001. After an increase of almost 9%, in 2002, imports declined by almost 11%, in 2003. In 2004 imports grew by over 12%, by 1.5% in 2005, and by just over 3% in 2006. In 2007 there was a huge increase of almost 38%. The balance of trade has shown a surplus for Brazil, except in 1997 and 1998. In 2007, the surplus of over $1.3 billion is just below the highest achieved last year.

Bilateral Trade 2006

In 2006 the United Kingdom was Brazil's thirteenth trading partner in terms of exports and seventeenth in terms of imports.

From 1996 to 2006, Brazilian exports to the United Kingdom grew by 131.9% in total. In 2006 exports grew by almost 9%. Brazilian imports from the United Kingdom rose from 1996 to 1998, then fell in 1999 and remained at that year's level in 2000 and 2001. After an increase of almost 9%, in 2002, imports declined by almost 11%, in 2003. In 2004 imports grew by over 12%, by 1.5% in 2005, and by just over 3% in 2006. The balance of trade has shown a surplus for Brazil, except in 1997 and 1998. In 2006, the surplus of almost $1.4 billion is the highest achieved in the last 10 years.

From 1995 to 2005, Brazilian exports to the United Kingdom grew by 95.5% in total. In 2005 exports grew by over 22%. Brazilian imports from the United Kingdom rose from 1995 to 1998, then fell in 1999 and remained at that year’s level in 2000 and 2001. After an increase of almost 9%, in 2002, imports declined by almost 11%, in 2003. In 2004 imports grew by over 12%, and by just 1.5% in 2005. The balance of trade has shown a surplus for Brazil, except in 1997 and 1998. In 2005, the surplus of $1.2 billion is the highest achieved in the last 10 years.
