University of London seminar discusses education in Brazil
16 November 2006
Brazilian government programmes aimed at increasing access to education for poorer members of society will be discussed as part of the International Seminar on Education, Equality and Social Justice (16 - 17 November), organised by the British Council.
The seminar will analyse Brazilian initiatives such as the Bolsa Família (Family Allowance), Finaciamento Estudantil and Universidade para Todos (aimed at widening access to higher education), and the Fundo de Manutenção e Desenvolvimento do Ensino Fundamental (aimed at ensuring that basic schooling is provided for all children).
Education specialists from Brazil, India, South Africa and the United Kingdom will participate in the event.
The main discussion will focus on the legacy of colonialism and its effect on present-day education systems.
Brazil's Ministry for Education will be represented by Ronaldo Mota, the Secretary for Distance Learning.
