Amorim says WTO negotiations need 'leadership' from US and EU

Speaking in Uruguay, where he was participating in a meeting to study the prospects for the resumption of the Doha Round of World Trade Organisation (WTO) negotiations, Brazilian foreign minister Celso Amorim reiterated that countries like Brazil continue to prioritise the elimination of US agricultural subsidies and increased access to the European market.

Amorim said the lack of an agreement could generate insecurity and instability throughout the world, but that 'a little more political will' and 'a little more leadership' on behalf of the US and EU could break the impasse. While acknowledging that all countries must play their part, he insisted that the onus in on the richest nations to ‘make the most courageous gesture’.

Amorim also referred to the G-20, the group of developing countries led by Brazil and India, commenting that it had an 'indispensable' role to play in achieving a successful conclusion to the Doha Round.
