The work of Lima Barreto is the subject of the 2007 International Essay Competition, organised by Ministry of External Relations as a means of promoting and publicising Brazilian literature outside Brazil.

The competition is open both to Brazilians and foreigners, but entrants must be resident outside Brazil and work in an area related to the study of the Portuguese language and/or Brazilian culture.

The five best essays will receive the 2007 Itamaraty Brazilian Literature Prize, and there is also a substantial cash prize. Those wishing to enter must do so by 30 April.
