President Lula says agreement on agricultural subsidies within reach
03 April 2007
An agreement regarding agricultural subsidies in the Doha Round of World Trade Organisation negotiations could be reached within a month, President Lula said today.
The negotiations, stalled since July last year, were discussed by President Lula and President George W Bush during their meeting at Camp David on 31 March.
President Bush expressed a desire to reach an agreement in the Doha Round, and suggested in a private meeting with President Lula that it could be achieved in the next 30 days.
President Lula said, ‘If we get agreement in the Doha Round, I think we’ll be taking a great step towards giving poor countries a chance in the twenty-first century’.
President Lula plans to discuss the Doha Round this week with the prime ministers of the United Kingdom and Germany, Tony Blair and Angela Merkel.
