Brazilian scientists test new diabetes therapy

A team of Brazilian and US scientists have successfully tested a ground-breaking form of stem-cell therapy for sufferers of Type 1 diabetes, potentially removing the need for them to receive insulin injections.

Brazilian diabetics aged between 14 and 31 participated in the trial for the new therapy, details of which have been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

One of the scientists conducting the trial, Julio Voltarelli from the University of São Paulo, reports that 'ninety-three per cent of patients achieved different periods of insulin independence'.
