Renewal of MINUSTAH mandate in Haiti

The Brazilian Government received with satisfaction the decision of the UN Security Council – by means of Resolution 1780 (2007), on 15 October – to extend the mandate of the Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) to 15 October 2008.

The decision of the Security Council, adopted unanimously, provides a renewed demonstration of the commitment on the part of the international community to the consolidation of peace, the reestablishment of conditions for the strengthening of institutions, and the resumption of development upon sustainable bases in Haiti.

In accordance with Resolution 1780 (2007), Brazil considers that it is vital to promote real improvement in the living conditions of the Haitian population, and will continue to play its part in contributing to this effort.

Brazil reaffirms its commitment to the Government and people of Haiti, which includes the continuation of its military command of MINUSTAH through Major-General Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz, the fourth Brazilian to occupy the position since the establishment of the Mission in 2004.
