Verdict announced in de Menezes case
01 November 2007
The Ministry of External Relations has received the news that the Metropolitan Police has been fined 175 thousand pounds, plus legal costs of 385 thousand pounds, for breaking public health and safety laws in the operation in which the Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes was killed.
Although it does not single out the individuals responsible for the tragedy, the decision recognises the responsibility of the Metropolitan Police in the case, and opens the way to new initiatives in favour of the family of that innocent Brazilian citizen.
The Ministry of External Relations renews the Brazilian Government’s solidarity with, and support for, the family of Jean Charles de Menezes, and will continue following the case and providing appropriate assistance.
