Brazil welcomes election of new UN Secretary-General

The government of Brazil has welcomed the election of South Korean foreign minister Ban Ki-moon as the next UN Secretary-General. In a phone call on 6 October, Brazilian foreign minister Celso Amorim congratulated him and reiterated Brazil’s commitment to the strengthening of the UN.

Given Ban Ki-moon’s extensive diplomatic experience and solid intellectual background, the Brazilian government believes he will be able to lead the UN in a balanced and firm way, meeting the complex challenges that currently face the organization.

The Brazilian government believes that UN reform is crucial in order to adapt the organization to the profound changes that have occurred in international relations in recent decades. It also believes the renovation of the UN system will only be complete with the reform of the Security Council, which is necessary in order to make it more representative, transparent and legitimate.
