Brazil and the nuclear issue
10 November 2006
Ambassador Samuel Pinheiro Guimarães, the secretary-general of Brazil's Ministry of External Relations, yesterday participated in the VI National Strategic Studies Meeting in Rio de Janeiro.
During the event he referred to the fact that Brazil's constitution states that nuclear activities in the country can only be conducted for peaceful purposes. He also pointed out that Brazil is a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) along with other disarmament and non-proliferation agreements, and that it adheres strictly to all of them. At no point did he give any indication that Brazil intends to withdraw from the NPT.
The Ministry of External Relations reiterates Brazil's absolute commitment to non-proliferation and the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
