Amorim says Brazil and US share desire for progress in WTO negotiations
06 January 2007
Brazilian foreign minister Celso Amorim met with US trade representative Susan Schwab in New York on 3 January.
After the meeting he said that although Brazil and the US recognise there is still a lot of work to be done with regard to the negotiations, both countries remain committed to the success of the Doha Round.
Amorim also emphasized that the WTO negotiations are a multilateral process, and that therefore problems cannot be resolved bilaterally or unilaterally.
He added that he and Ms Schwab shared the view 'every side has to make concessions, and these will be of benefit to all'. When asked about the extent to which the US was prepared to make those concessions, he said the US displayed a 'willingness to discuss' which was itself 'very positive'.
