Palestinian national unity government
17 March 2007
Brazil welcomes the news that the creation of national unity government of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) has been approved by the Palestinian Legislative Council.
The Brazilian government trusts that this initiative, the fruit of intense dialogue between the major Palestinian political forces, will serve to reduce internal tensions and disputes, facilitate the desired normalisation of relations between the PNA and the international community, and encourage the prompt resumption of the peace process in accordance with the ‘Road Map’ and the agreements already signed.
Brazil expresses its willingness to support cooperation initiatives aimed at improving living conditions in the Palestinian territories and at strengthening and consolidating local institutions.
The Brazilian government reiterates its support for Palestinian self-determination and for the creation of an independent, sovereign, geographically cohesive and economically viable Palestinian state that will coexist peacefully with Israel.
