Brazil sends observers to East Timor elections
22 June 2007
Brazil will send a mission of observers to the legislative elections taking place in East Timor on 30 June. The mission will consist of members of parliament, diplomats, and a teacher working on a cooperation project in the country.
The mission follows two others that were present on the occasions of the first and second rounds of the East Timor presidential elections on 9 April and 9 May this year.
East Timor is the only country in Asia and Oceania that has Portuguese as its official language. Brazil is cooperating with the country in areas that are essential to the formation of its nascent state structure, such as education, justice, security, and professional training.
