National Programme for Public Security with Citizenship (PRONASCI) sanctioned by President
25 October 2007
Law no. 11.530 institutes the National Programme for Public Security with Citizenship, PRONASCI. It was sanctioned by the President and published on Thursday 24 October. This law is the responsibility of the Ministry of Justice and aims at fighting violence in Brazil by co-ordinating public security and social policies in partnership with various federal, state and municipal government bodies as well as with the civil society.
According to the Ministry of Justice, the main focus of the Programme are the young adults from 15 to 29 years of age who are at risk of committing crime or who have already offended. Based on a more humanistic perspective, its purpose is to invest in preventive and rehabilitation initiatives supported by multidisciplinary teams made up of social workers, psychologists, educationalists and other specialists.
The Ministry of Justice pointed out that PRONASCI also includes, on the one hand, the improvement in public and prison security and values the professionals working in those areas; and on the other, a reinforcement of the measures to fight organised crime and corruption.
