29 May 2009
The Brazilian Government vehemently condemns he nuclear test carried out by North Korea today. The test violates United Nations Security Council Resolution 1718, adopted on 14 October 2006.
Brazil expresses the expectation that North Korea will rejoin the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty as quickly as possible as a country without nuclear weapons.
The Brazilian Government also calls on North Korea to sign the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and to strictly observe the moratorium on nuclear tests.
Brazil hopes, furthermore, that North Korea will return, in a constructive spirit, to the Six-Party Talks aimed at achieving the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, and appeals to all parties to avoid any actions that might aggravate tensions in either a regional or global context.
