Rio's Olympic victory
03 October 2009
The International Olympic Committee, meeting for its 121st Session, yesterday chose Rio de Janeiro as the host city for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Rio de Janeiro will be the first city in South America to host the games.
The IOC’s decision is a victory for all Brazilians. It results, among other things, from international recognition of Brazil's role in world affairs, the strength of its democracy and of the stability of its economy.
The Ministry of External Relations expresses its satisfaction at having participated in this successful effort, and congratulates the other organs of the federal, state and municipal governments, along with the Brazilian Olympic Committee, upon the choice of Rio de Janeiro as the host city for the 2106 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
