Brasília to host Portuguese language conference
05 March 2010
The Brasília headquarters of Brazil's foreign ministry, Itamaraty Palace, will be hosting a major conference of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa - CPLP) from 25-30 March.
The International Conference on the Future of the Portuguese Language in the World will include discussions regarding ways of raising the international profile of Portuguese. With over 200 million native speakers, Portuguese is usually ranked sixth or seventh among the world's most widely-spoken languages. It is the world's third most widely-spoken European language, after English and Spanish.
In addition to the eight members of the CPLP (Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, and São Tomé and Príncipe) representatives from Equatorial Guinea, Mauritius and Senegal will attend the event as observers.
