Brazil forging friendships through football

The Brazilian government is supporting football coaching for 200 young people from deprived parts of Johannesburg during the World Cup.

The coaching sessions, taking place at the Cecil Payne Sports Complex and at Eldorado Park on the edge of Johannesburg, are being run by members of the Olé Brasil football club from Ribeirão Preto (São Paulo state) with equipment donated by Brazil’s sports ministry.

The young South Africans receiving the coaching are all involved in projects run by local NGO Conquest for Life.

Special coaching has been developed for those youngsters who are HIV-positive or who have disabilities.

The Palestinian national women's football squad, meanwhile, is in Brazil for a two-week training programme in Santos (São Paulo state) as part of a sporting cooperation agreement between Brazil and the Palestinian Occupied Territories. During their stay the Palestinian team will also be playing friendly matches against Brazilian women's teams.
