Angola hosts conference of Portuguese-speaking countries

Brazil was represented by foreign minister Celso Amorim at the VIII Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa – CPLP) in Luanda, Angola, on 23 July.

Created in 1996, the CPLP consists of Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, and São Tomé & Príncipe.

With the CPLP having a combined population of over 230 million, Portuguese is usually ranked sixth or seventh among the world's most widely-spoken languages. In terms of the number of native speakers it is now third among the European languages, after Spanish and English, and in the Southern Hemisphere it has more native speakers than any other language.
