The Brazilian ambassador has praised the work of Sheffield Hallam University's research centres, and commended the collaboration between Sheffield's businesses and researchers.

During a tour of the University's science, engineering and maths facilities, His Excellency Roberto Jaguaribe met with University executives and academics, including researchers from Sheffield Hallam's Centre for Sports Engineering Research.

Mr Jaguaribe said: "There is a lot of good interaction between research at Sheffield Hallam and industry in the Sheffield City Region, and further afield nationally and internationally. This is something we want to increase significantly in Brazil.

"Additionally, we intend to send 10,000 Brazilian students to the UK through the Science Without Borders programme. And because the programme is specially geared toward engineering and technical demands, I think Sheffield is extremely well-placed to receive a number of Brazilian students.

"But we are also very impressed with another dimension we have seen today, which takes place in this university - the interaction between sports and engineering. This interaction has helped to produce many important programmes here in the UK."

The Brazilian government's Science Without Borders programme will provide scholarships to undergraduate students from Brazil for one year of study at colleges and universities in the UK. Scholarships will be given primarily to students in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Students in the program will return to Brazil to complete their degrees.
