Brazil elects first female president

Dilma Rousseff of the Workers' Party (PT) will become Brazil's first female president after she beat José Serra of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB) in a presidential election run-off on 31 October. In the parliamentary elections the PT-led government coalition won a clear majority in both the upper and lower houses. The PSDB was the most successful party in the gubernatorial elections.
