Workshops for schools

WORKSHOP - AFROBRAZIL

On 2 October, at the beginning of 'Black History Month' in the UK, the Embassy of Brazil invited 21 pupils from Glenbrook School in Clapham, south London, to participate in a workshop on the theme of the 'AfroBrazil' exhibition at Gallery 32, which includes works by CAPA (Afro-Brazilian Artists Association) and portraits of the artists by the photographer Walter Firmo.

After playing games introducing various aspects of Brazil's African cultural heritage, the children were given a guided tour of the exhibition by the curator. They then created their own art on large panels shaped like Brazil and Africa, based on their own perceptions of those two parts of the world. At the end of the workshop the 'coasts' of the two panels were brought together, symbolically uniting South America and Africa in a single art work.

The children's creation was later shown at Glenbrook School, along with other works from the AfroBrazil exhibition.

STREET ART BRAZIL - Brazilian Roots / Stone Crabs Theatre Company

The colourful and exciting approach to urban art that has put Brazil at the forefront of the global graffiti movement was very much in evidence in the Street Art Brazil exhibition at Gallery 32 in April 2008. The São Paulo street artists Tinho, Pato and Flip were given free rein to create the kind of extraordinary murals for which they have become famous in Brazil, and the Embassy of Brazil took the opportunity to invite British schoolchildren to a workshop inspired by the exhibition.

The event took place on 25 April and was led by the artist Tereza Araújo from Brazilian Roots / Stone Crabs Theatre Company, whose work introduces children to Brazilian culture through a mixture of art, crafts, drama and games. It was attended by twenty-six children, all from St Mary of the Angels Roman Catholic primary school in London. After guiding the children through the Street Art Brazil exhibition, Tereza helped them create two colourful artworks of their own, based on their local environment. The pictures were then put on display in the gallery.

BRAZILIAN FIVE-A-SIDE FOOTBALL - Kickers Futsal

Kickers is a London-based club dedicated to introducing futsal, a distinctively Brazilian form of five-a-side football, to the UK. Futsal has not only played a major role in honing the skills of many of Brazil's professional footballers, but it is also an excellent way of preparing junior players for the 11-a-side game.

The club's Brazilian coaches all speak English, and are available to give lessons to children of all ages.

KABULA WORKSHOPS FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Kabula Arts and Culture has designed a series of workshops with Bumba-meu-boi and Capoeira Angola for children and young people. The workshops are a unique opportunity to experience the rich aspects that are central to Afro-Brazilian culture and to learn about their roots in Africa, transformation in Brazil and journey to the rest of the world. Bumba-meu-boi is a parade of human and animal characters and fantastic creatures from Brazilian Indian mythology to the sounds of music and singing. Capoeira Angola is an embodiment of history, tradition and search for self-esteem and pride. Both are forms of story telling and they create a space for the participants' self-expression and to explore ecology, history and art.

Kabula is a community organisation that aims to connect and inspire people through the powerful tradition and energy of Afro-Brazilian culture, in particular the rhythms, movements, songs and stories that traveled from Africa to Brazil and beyond.

CARNIVAL AND THE AMAZON - Brazilian Roots / Stone Crabs Theatre Company

Brazilian Roots offers a mixture of art, crafts, drama and games, aimed at introducing children to Brazilian culture, particularly carnival, folklore, indigenous peoples, and the flora and fauna of the Amazon region.

The workshops focus either on carnival or the Amazon, and consist of three parts: an introduction, including a talk and a short film; practical work, in which the children make masks (carnival) or a collage (Amazon); and finally ‘putting it all together’, in which the children are encouraged to improvise a short drama piece.

The workshops usually last between 60 and 90 minutes.
